Saying you don't think shy nerds are likely to be the primary sources of harassment in academia gives them a hiding spot, though. If people keep believing "It's just aggressive manly men who are the problem," then it becomes too easy for shy nerds to hide under the cover of "No, it's not us. I can't be a harasser because I am not the problem," and of course they'll be believed.

[cont] Your experiences are valid, and I recognize that you have been harassed by a certain type of man in STEM. But furthering stereotypes and pushing narratives greatly harms victims of “non-traditional” harassers and makes it harder for them to be believed.

how big of a deal do you think I think I am? yes, shy nerdy men are fully capable of committing harassment and of driving women out of jobs and degree programs. my experience doesn’t undermine the validity of anyone else’s.

one of the most important points I see in MIT’s investigation into lewin’s harassment is that they finally aren’t granting immunity to faculty members (and, with luck, any other predator) based on their reputations, either as academics or as people. so shy nerds committing harassment are more likely to be reported to MIT’s admins, and the admins are more likely to actually follow up, regardless of the accused’s shyness/charisma/number of patents.

MIT being a big name means this is more likely to happen at other schools, as well. if MIT can strip lewin of emeritus status, no man using his power to violate women is safe. if this sets precedent, shy nerdy men are just as screwed as charismatic science rockstar assholes, because precedent doesn’t care about the nerd’s ability to use a single woman’s posts on tumblr as a hiding spot from his own disgusting behavior.

fucking honestly, I am one shitty bachelor’s-of-engineering piece of uselessness typing into the void about one professor’s reaction to another’s disgusting behavior at my alma mater. I am working through my personal experience with my old school’s sudden change in treatment of academic harassment cases and getting annoyed that anyone even cares about one mediagenic comp sci prof’s sad backstory when he’s actively trying to sanctify the work of a predator. I am trying to figure out why lewin got blacklisted by MIT in every way possible while my adviser - an idiosyncratic non-mediagenic nerd - who wrote porn about assaulting a student with my name is still researching and publishing as an MIT affiliate.

I sincerely apologize for not feministing hard enough while I’m processing in front of my minuscule audience. I will sweep up my ideological failures as soon as I have the ability to do so.

Hi, Eron and friends! It warms my heart that you find me so reprehensible, Zoe Quinn is flattering company. I just find it incredibly fascinating how you think a multi-month campaign of harassment by tens of thousands of people that drives women from their homes perfectly acceptable, but a single person posting factual information that you really can only find if you’re looking for it is just beyond the pale. Extremely fascinating.

Btw, I did post that disclaimer page. On the way to telling me how horrible I am, you can find it on the same menu. Toodles!

You're using her former url, impersonating her, and posting things about her maliciously. You don't have to actively seek her out to harass her.

Would it help if I added an “about me” page saying I am not her? I thought it was pretty obvious from the way I kept referring to her in the third person, but I guess it’s best to make it absolutely clear for the slow learners in the audience.

As for the latter part of that sentence, we’ve gone over this. Posting primary sources and factual accounts is not actionable.

Okay, but intentionally and maliciously inflicting emotional harm on another person is definitely harassment in most states. Are you really so bored that you don't have anything better to do than comb through everything someone's said on the internet? Why can't everyone stop throwing around hate and just cool it? It might be entertaining for you or satiate some vindictive need you feel for /internet justice/, but it's hurtful and unnecessary.

I think you’re reading way more into this than there is. I’m not doing this for the original owner of this url, and it’ll be easy enough for her to avoid if she doesn’t want to see it. Hell, I thought she said she was done with tumblr. I have no intention of seeking her out for any reason and have no way of contacting her even if I wanted to.

Do you know anything about harassment or libel laws? Are you 12 years old? Do you live with your parents?

For something to be libel it must first be untrue. I’m merely reposting primary sources and others’ words.

I think this is a good time to also mention: I have none of the original owner of this url’s personal info, and have no interest in it. Doxxing is not going to happen here. I just intend to make this a gathering place for gamergate info and one person’s involvement in it.
